THE WIFE BEHIND THE WALL

Her name was Elena Moretti.

Thirty-seven.

Matteo’s legal wife.

Missing for six years.

Declared dead after a private plane crash.

No body recovered.

Clara looked from Elena to Matteo.

“You kept her behind a wall?”

“No,” Matteo said.

Elena answered:

“He did not know.”

The passage connected to an abandoned medical wing beneath the estate.

Someone had moved Elena there three days earlier.

She had been drugged.

Weak.

But conscious.

Bruno approached her carefully.

She touched his head.

“He remembers me.”

Matteo knelt.

For the first time, Clara saw control leave his face.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

No joy.

No hatred.

Only exhaustion.

“You believed the crash.”

“I searched for two years.”

“Then stopped.”

He absorbed it.

“Yes.”

Elena had survived.

The crash was staged by Matteo’s uncle, Lorenzo Moretti.

He wanted control of the family’s legitimate shipping company.

Elena owned voting shares through her father.

Her death transferred them to Matteo.

His death would transfer them to Lorenzo.

A two-step succession plan.

Elena was kept alive because her biometric approval was required every three years.

She had been moved between hidden facilities.

Why bring her back to the estate now?

Because the next approval was due in forty-eight hours.

Lorenzo needed her signature.

Grant worked for him.

Hayes Security had access to the mansion.

The dog abuse was intended to create chaos.

Clara’s placement was intended to trigger Grant’s legal claim and bring forged documents into the estate.

Everything converged.

Elena looked at Clara.

“You were chosen because you resemble my sister.”

Clara froze.

“What sister?”

“Anna Bennett.”

Clara’s mother’s maiden name was Bennett.

Anna Bennett had disappeared before Clara was born.

Her family said she moved overseas.

Elena continued:

“Anna was my younger sister.”

Clara stared.

“My mother is your sister?”

“No.”

“Then who am I?”

Elena reached for Clara’s hand.

“You’re Anna’s daughter.”

Clara’s mother, Margaret Hayes, had raised her.

But Anna Bennett was her biological mother.

Grant had known.

That was why he targeted Clara.

Anna once held partial rights to the Moretti shipping trust.

If Clara was Anna’s legal heir, she controlled the deciding vote between Matteo and Lorenzo.

The fake divorce kept Grant attached to her rights.

The job at the estate placed her near the transfer.

Matteo’s “bride” declaration accidentally created another legal complication.

Under the Moretti trust, a public engagement witnessed by household staff could trigger spousal review if supported by cohabitation and intent.

Clara laughed in disbelief.

“So your lie may have put me inside another trust?”

Lucia nodded.

“Temporarily.”

Clara looked at Matteo.

“Congratulations. You protected me into another legal trap.”

He almost smiled.

Then stopped.

“Fair.”

Elena asked for a phone.

Lucia refused until medical teams confirmed no tracker.

Independent authorities were contacted.

Not Matteo’s private doctor.

Not Moretti security.

Bruno remained beside Elena.

Then the dog’s collar activated.

A green light.

The same Hayes Security transmitter style.

Grant’s voice came through.

“Clara, bring Elena to the courtyard.”

Bruno growled.

Grant continued:

“Or your mother dies.”

A live feed appeared on Clara’s phone.

Margaret Hayes sat inside Grant’s car.

Hands bound.

Terrified.

Behind her stood Lorenzo Moretti.

May you like

He smiled.

“Family reunions are complicated.”
