Chapter 14 - THE SECOND PERSON

The second person was Dr. Samuel Reed.

Not a physician.

A retired addiction counselor who once worked with Vanessa and Natalie’s mother.

Vanessa called him during Natalie’s relapse.

Samuel advised:

“Get her into treatment.”

Vanessa said Natalie refused.

Then, disastrously, Samuel suggested a short private stabilization period before formal intake.

Not confinement.

Not hiding.

A day or two with family supervision.

Vanessa transformed that suggestion.

Weeks later Samuel learned Natalie was still “staying privately” with Vanessa.

He objected.

Vanessa told him Natalie was choosing it.

Samuel visited the house once.

Michael was away.

Natalie was below.

Samuel never saw her.

He heard movement.

Asked.

Vanessa said:

“She’s resting downstairs.”

The house had no downstairs.

Samuel thought she meant the sunken den.

He did not check.

Then later he confronted Vanessa by phone.

“You said temporary.”

That was the sentence Natalie heard.

Samuel told Vanessa he would contact Natalie directly.

Vanessa blocked his number on Natalie’s old phone.

Then told Samuel Natalie entered formal treatment elsewhere.

He believed her.

Another adult satisfied by a plausible answer.

Samuel’s advice had been careless.

Vanessa’s use of it was not authorized.

He cooperated fully.

No secret co-conspirator.

No underground medical scheme.

The final mystery narrowed back to Vanessa.

Why had she panicked so violently when Michael raised the hammer?

Because she knew Natalie was directly below that section.

The final days had become desperate.

Natalie was weak.

Vanessa had planned to move her that night.

Then Emily kept prying.

Vanessa realized the floor might open.

Michael asked through counsel:

“Why not let Natalie out before I found her?”

Vanessa’s answer was simple.

“Because once he saw her, there was no version of me left that he could still love.”

That was the final secret.

Not what was under the floor.

What Vanessa was protecting above it.

Her identity.
