Chapter 3 - THE FOOTAGE THAT LIED

Emma had entered the accounting office.

She had done it two nights earlier while working a private dinner upstairs. Luca had sent her a message containing a temporary door code and four words: Find your father’s file.

Inside, she found an empty folder labeled THOMAS REED and photographed a transfer ledger on the desk. She touched nothing else.

Vincent’s footage showed her opening a safe.

That part had never happened.

“Look at the clock reflection,” Emma said.

On the wall, the digital security timestamp read 1:14 a.m. In the polished cabinet behind her, the office clock showed 1:47. The video had been assembled from separate recordings.

Vincent did not look surprised.

“You’re observant. The police may still prefer fingerprints.”

Derek placed a leather case on the table. Inside were bundles of cash and Emma’s missing employee badge. Her fingerprints would be everywhere; the case had belonged to Luca, and she had carried it into their apartment months earlier.

This was not evidence designed to survive a perfect investigation. It was evidence designed to control the first headline.

Emma understood the challenge now. Vincent had dragged her into the center of the gala so every influential guest would remember the desperate waitress who attacked his security chief after being accused of theft.

She turned toward the ballroom doors. Two uniformed officers were already waiting.

Vincent had invited them.

Before they reached her, a woman rose from the board members’ table. Evelyn Shaw, Moretti Holdings’ seventy-year-old general counsel, walked onto the floor carrying Emma’s fallen apron.

“No arrest,” Evelyn told the officers. “The company has not filed a complaint.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened. “That is my decision.”

“Not while the missing funds came from the Reed Employee Trust.”

Emma looked sharply at her.

Thomas Reed had not only been head of security. Before his death, he and Carlo Moretti created a profit-sharing trust for the workers who built the company’s hotels. It owned sixteen percent of Moretti Holdings. The eight million dollars had been taken from its reserve account.

Under the trust terms, any accusation involving a Reed descendant required independent review.

Evelyn handed Emma the apron. Sewn inside its hem was a thin plastic card Emma had never seen.

“Your father left instructions,” Evelyn said quietly. “If anyone ever accused you of stealing from the trust, I was to give you this.”

The card contained only a bank number and a handwritten date.

The date was tomorrow.
