Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT THAT OPENED ONCE
At nine the next morning, Emma entered a private bank vault with Evelyn and a federal magistrate as witnesses.
The number opened a safe-deposit box funded twelve years earlier. Inside lay a microcassette, Carlo Moretti’s original trust agreement, and a letter in Thomas Reed’s handwriting.
Emma, if you are reading this, someone has used the trust as bait. Do not assume the person who gives you this box is innocent. Follow the insurance payments.
The warning included Evelyn.
The cassette held an argument between Thomas and Carlo. Carlo admitted that Moretti construction companies were laundering cash through labor contracts. Thomas threatened to take the records to federal investigators. Carlo offered him money. Thomas refused.
Then a third voice entered the room.
Young, controlled, unmistakable.
Vincent Moretti.
“Give me the ledger,” twenty-eight-year-old Vincent said on the recording, “or Emma grows up without a father.”
The tape ended before Thomas answered.
It proved motive, not murder. Worse, its chain of custody could be challenged. Anyone could claim Thomas edited it before hiding it.
The insurance records were stronger. After the warehouse fire, a policy on Thomas’s life paid six million dollars—not to Emma or her mother, but to a Moretti subsidiary. That money capitalized the employee trust.
Vincent had built his public reputation by claiming his family funded it.
Emma confronted Evelyn.
“You knew.”
“I knew the insurance payment,” Evelyn said. “I did not know Vincent threatened your father.”
“Why wait twelve years?”
“Because Thomas ordered me to. He believed disclosure before the trust’s conversion date would allow the Morettis to dissolve it.”
Tomorrow’s date was the conversion. If the trustees voted correctly, the employees’ sixteen-percent interest would become permanent voting equity. If the trust was found compromised by theft first, Vincent could petition to terminate it.
The missing eight million was not merely stolen money. It was the excuse he needed to destroy the workers’ ownership.
Evelyn requested an emergency board session. Vincent responded within an hour by releasing the edited security footage to the press.
