Chapter 9 - WHAT LOVE COULD NOT EXCUSE
Emma confronted Luca before the vote.
He admitted signing. Vincent had threatened to expose Luca’s mother for hiding Moretti money decades earlier. She could face prison and lose the home where she cared for Luca’s disabled aunt.
“I can’t destroy them for the trust,” Luca said.
“So you’ll destroy hundreds of families instead.”
“You don’t understand what he can do.”
Emma looked at the man she had planned to marry and understood him completely. Luca loved her. He was also willing to make strangers pay whenever courage became personally expensive.
She removed her engagement ring.
“That isn’t love I can build a life inside.”
Luca did not change his vote.
Emma did not beg again.
At the shareholder meeting, Vincent appeared by video, smiling from his mansion. The offshore sale reached sixty-eight percent—until Evelyn challenged the three frightened investors’ proxies. Bank records from Thomas’s locker showed Vincent had financed their shares through undisclosed side agreements. Under state law and the company charter, the votes were conflicted and invalid.
The total fell to fifty-six percent.
The sale failed.
At noon, Grace authenticated the amendment. A judge ordered the conversion to proceed. The Reed Employee Trust became permanent voting equity administered by five elected workers, none named Moretti or Reed.
Vincent lost effective control of the board.
His criminal case lasted nine months. The government used financial records, authenticated audio, Luca’s confinement evidence, Kessler’s messages, and Derek’s testimony. Vincent’s lawyers attacked every witness as compromised.
They were not wrong about the witnesses. They were wrong that compromised people could never tell provable truth.
Vincent was convicted on most counts but acquitted of ordering Thomas’s murder, because Thomas was alive and no evidence proved Vincent intended his death. Kessler was convicted separately. Derek received a reduced sentence for kidnapping and financial conspiracy. Evelyn surrendered her law license and avoided prison after full cooperation.
Luca was not charged with the original theft, but the Moretti board removed him for signing the conflicted sale. Emma never married him.

On sentencing day, Vincent asked Emma whether beating Derek had been worth it.
“That fight wasn’t the reversal,” she said. “It was just the first time your room stopped laughing.”
