Chapter 5 - MRS. WHITAKER’S SECRET
Mrs. Whitaker did not fight Andrea.
She began crying.
Sofia had given her the modified Lego two days before the explosion. She said it contained proof that someone inside Marino Shipping was diverting weapons through humanitarian cargo. If Sofia died, Mrs. Whitaker was to deliver it to a federal prosecutor—not Enzo.
“Why hide it among children’s toys?” Andrea asked.
“Because Sofia believed no Marino man ever looked closely at what his children built.”
Mrs. Whitaker had tried to retrieve it for eight months. The twins panicked whenever she approached their Lego table. Her strictness was not cruelty, she insisted, but fear. When the brick opened, she ran toward the fire because Matteo had threatened her adult daughter that morning.
Fear explained her choice. It did not excuse it.
Enzo locked the memory card in a safe and called federal prosecutor Helen Brooks. Andrea objected.
“Sofia told Mrs. Whitaker not to give it to you.”
The words wounded him visibly.
Enzo agreed that Brooks would open it while he watched from across the room.
The card contained shipping manifests, photographs of unregistered crates, and a short video recorded by Sofia. She said Matteo and Dr. Voss were using Enzo’s routes without his approval. She planned to confront the company board the next morning.
The explosion happened that night.
The final file was damaged. Technicians recovered seven seconds: Sofia standing in the lake house garage while a black car approached. A red safety flare burned beneath its rear bumper.
Leo’s red brick had not represented fire beneath the car. It represented the flare.
The vehicle’s plate was unreadable, but a fleet number appeared on the side.
It belonged to Enzo’s own security division.
