Chapter 8 - THE GUARDIAN’S COUNTERMOVE
Matteo was arrested for conspiracy, attempted destruction of evidence, and witness intimidation. Prosecutors still lacked direct proof that he built or ordered the explosive device.
His attorneys attacked the twins’ statements as contaminated by Andrea. They displayed her notes, her conversations with Dr. Cole, and the Lego reconstructions. They argued she had rewarded the children for identifying Matteo.
Andrea had never offered rewards, but the accusation was plausible enough to require a hearing.
Matteo produced his strongest weapon: Andrea’s debt.
She owed forty-seven thousand dollars in medical bills from her sister’s accident. Two weeks before taking the nanny job, an unknown company paid nine thousand toward those bills. The company was linked to a federal informant fund.
Matteo claimed Andrea had been planted by prosecutors.
Andrea knew nothing about the payment. Brooks denied authorizing it. The source turned out to be Mrs. Whitaker, who had quietly used money Sofia left for anyone who protected the boys.
Mrs. Whitaker believed she was helping. Instead, her secrecy made Andrea appear purchased.
The judge excluded the twins’ direct identification of Matteo from the criminal trial until experts could determine whether adult influence shaped it. The legal setback felt devastating, but Dr. Cole reminded Andrea that the children’s healing mattered more than whether their words convicted anyone.
Enzo finally did what no one expected. He opened Marino Shipping’s internal archives to federal investigators and admitted his own crimes: bribery, extortion, and money laundering committed years before Sofia’s death.
The evidence would send him to prison.
It also removed Matteo’s ability to hide the weapons operation behind family privilege.
Auditors traced the explosive components to a Marino warehouse controlled by Matteo. Vehicle GPS showed his phone followed Voss’s security car to the lake house. Russo’s bank records showed a two-million-dollar payment routed from Matteo after the attack.
The children’s statements were no longer the foundation of the case. They were corroboration.
Matteo changed his plea only after Russo agreed to testify.
Before sentencing, he asked to speak privately with Enzo.
