Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO WAS STILL BREATHING
The official report said Sofia died instantly.
Dr. Voss confessed that was false.
He found her alive near the garage while Enzo was racing from Chicago. Matteo ordered Voss to sedate her and withhold treatment. Voss claimed he believed she could not survive and feared Matteo would kill his family.
Again, fear explained obedience. Again, it did not erase responsibility.
Sofia regained consciousness inside the ambulance and said three words: “The boys saw.”
Voss recorded her death twelve minutes later. He altered the time and destroyed the ambulance camera, but he kept the medical bag as leverage against Matteo.
The twins had not watched their mother die. They had watched adults carry her away alive and later tell them the blast killed her instantly. Their silence was not only trauma. It was the last control they possessed in a house where adults rewrote reality.
Prosecutors charged Voss with evidence tampering and obstruction. He agreed to testify. Matteo remained free because Voss could not prove who planted the device.
Dominic Russo was found at a motel in Indiana. He offered a different story: Matteo did not order the explosion. Sofia did.
According to Russo, Sofia planned a small garage fire to destroy illegal weapons and force an investigation. The blast spread unexpectedly. He produced messages from Sofia’s phone discussing a “controlled burn.”
Enzo collapsed under the possibility that his wife caused her own death and endangered their children.
Andrea examined the messages with Brooks. Sofia’s writing style was correct. The timestamps were correct. But one photograph attached to the thread showed the red flare on a workbench.
In the metal reflection, a man’s hand held the phone.
He wore a square onyx ring.
Matteo wore the same ring in every family photograph.
The image alone could be dismissed as coincidence. Leo supplied what it lacked.
During a recorded therapy session, Dr. Cole asked him to draw the garage. Leo drew his mother near the door, the black car, and a man with a black square on his hand.
