Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE WAS THE BAIT, NOT THE PRIZE

The first thing Judith did after the police appeared was scream that Claire had staged everything.
The second thing she did was demand an attorney.
The third thing she did was ask Andrew why there were police inside a house he supposedly “owned.”
That was when the family fracture began.
The officers were not there because of the gate.
Not originally.
They had been inside for forty-three minutes before the SUV arrived.
Executing a search warrant.
The sealed evidence box contained copies of property records, banking files, and a laptop recovered from a hidden cabinet in Andrew’s former study.
Claire had discovered the cabinet three weeks earlier.
Not because she was snooping.
Because the smart-home system sent a maintenance alert for a wall sensor that had not existed on the original floor plan.
Behind a removable panel, she found a locked compartment.
She did not open it.
She called her attorney.
Then a forensic accountant.
Then police.
That choice mattered.
Had she opened it herself, Andrew would later argue contamination.
Instead, she left it untouched until investigators obtained a warrant.
Inside they found:
unsigned deeds,
photocopies of Claire’s trust documents,
company formation papers,
three USB drives,
and a stack of notarized documents bearing Claire’s name.
Claire had never seen them.
One document transferred “beneficial occupancy control” of the mansion into Bennett Heritage Holdings LLC.
Another pledged the property as “family collateral” for a private credit line.

Both carried what looked like Claire’s signature.
Neither was hers.
