Chapter 5 - MADISON FOUND THE REAL DOCUMENT
Madison called Claire at 1:12 a.m. three nights after the gate incident.
Claire almost declined.
Then answered.
Madison was crying.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“In Mom’s storage room.”
Claire sat up.
Andrew had been released pending further investigation.
Judith faced property-damage and trespass-related charges.
The family group chat had become unusable.
Madison continued.
“There’s a folder with your name on it.”
“Don’t touch anything else.”
“I already did.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course.
“What’s inside?”
Madison swallowed.
“Your grandmother’s trust.”
Claire went still.
The original certified trust copy had vanished from the mansion safe seven months before the divorce.
Andrew blamed a document-management company.
Claire suspected him.
Now Madison had found it inside Judith’s locked storage cabinet.
Alongside it:
a blank notary seal,
old signature samples,
and printed emails between Andrew and Judith.
One email read:
Once Claire signs the refinance package, the trust problem disappears.
Another:
She never reads the annexes.
Claire’s blood went cold.
She did read annexes.
That was why the refinance never closed.
Andrew had assumed laziness where there was vigilance.
And when Claire refused to sign, he apparently moved to fabrication.
Madison whispered:
“Claire… Mom knew.”
Not everything.
But enough.
Enough to understand Andrew was trying to make the house function like collateral.
