Chapter 5 - DONNA'S VERSION OF LOVE

Donna agreed to meet only after Mark begged her.
That annoyed Claire more than if Donna had refused.
They met at Donna’s house.
The same patio.
The same grass.
Rocket had been repaired.
Eli stayed with Rachel’s sister for the afternoon.
Claire refused to bring him back into that yard.
Donna sat with folded hands.
“You dragged outsiders into family business.”
Claire almost laughed.
“Your grandson was shoved onto the ground.”
“Tyler is a child.”
“So is Eli.”
Donna looked at Mark.
“This is what she does. She escalates.”
Mark said nothing.
Claire waited.
Then asked:
“Why did you hide Arthur?”
Donna’s face changed.
Not fear.
Old anger.
“Arthur was a mistake.”
Mark looked at her.
“I’m his son.”
“You are Howard’s son.”
“Biologically—”
“Biology did not stay up with you when you had pneumonia. Biology did not teach you to drive.”
Claire almost agreed with the emotional logic.
Then Donna ruined it.
“And biology does not get to destroy what Howard built.”
There it was.
Control.
Claire asked:
“Did Arthur want Mark?”
Donna’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
Mark went still.
Donna continued.
“He wanted custody.”
“What?”
“When you were three.”
Mark stared.
Donna explained.
Arthur had become wealthy quickly.
He believed he could give Mark more.
Donna refused.
Howard knew by then that Mark might not be his.
He chose to stay.
Arthur threatened court.
Donna threatened exposure of financial misconduct from Arthur’s early company.
Arthur backed down.
Mark looked devastated.
“You kept him away.”
“I protected you.”
“From my father.”
“From a man who thought money made him entitled to you.”
Claire heard the irony immediately.
Donna did not.
Or refused to.
Mark asked:
“Why tell me Howard was my father?”
“Because he was.”
The answer was not entirely wrong.
That made it harder.
Claire asked:
“Then why fight the Cole claim now?”
Donna looked at her.
“Because inheritance changes people.”
“Or because it changes your leverage.”
Donna’s eyes flashed.
“You think this is about me?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
She stood.
“This is about Susan.”
Mark frowned.
Donna explained.
After Daniel died, Susan discovered he had hidden enormous gambling debt.
Donna used nearly all her liquid savings to save Susan’s home and business.
She borrowed against Bennett trust assets.
If Mark triggered litigation around Howard’s old estate structure, those loans could be exposed as unauthorized.
Donna could lose the house.
Susan could lose hers.
Tyler and Ben could lose their school funds.
Claire sat back.
There it was.
Motive.
Again.
Not simple greed.
Donna had protected one child by putting another child beneath the consequences.
Claire said:
“So Eli gets bullied because you’re scared of losing money?”
Donna snapped:
“No!”
“Then why do you treat him like he’s less?”
Donna’s face twisted.
“Because Susan’s boys lost their father!”
“And Eli has a father who refuses to protect him.”
Silence.
Mark went pale.
Claire did not regret it.
Donna whispered:
“Mark protects his family.”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
Then at Donna.
“He protects you from having to face what you’ve done.”
Donna’s eyes filled.
She hated tears and wiped them away instantly.
Then she said:
“You want the truth? Fine.”
She looked at Mark.
“Arthur Cole didn’t just want you.”
A pause.
“He wanted Susan too.”
Mark frowned.
“What?”
May you like
Donna said:
“Because Susan is his daughter as well.”
