Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF A SISTER’S VOTE

Daniel invited Vanessa to dinner as though nothing had changed.
She went wearing a wire supplied by Torres.
Claire listened from the adjoining suite while Daniel poured champagne and apologized for “the confusion.” He blamed Roland for the tracker, the forged documents, and the threats. He claimed he had married Vanessa to protect her from her father.
“And Claire?” Vanessa asked.
“A mistake that became useful.”
Claire closed her eyes.
She had heard worse from him, but never so cleanly.
Daniel offered Vanessa a bargain. Sign the hotel sale and refuse to co-sign Claire’s trust activation. In return, he would destroy the altered childhood recording and transfer thirty million dollars to an account beyond Roland’s reach.
“You can be free,” he said.
“With you?”
“If you want.”
“Do you love me?”
Daniel paused just long enough to tell the truth.
“I chose you.”
Vanessa removed the wire.
Claire heard fabric rustle, then silence.
The adjoining door opened twenty minutes later. Vanessa entered alone.
“The transmission cut out,” Claire said.
Vanessa placed the wire on the table. “I took his deal.”
Claire stared at her.
“He has the original recording,” Vanessa continued. “Not an altered copy. It proves I led Dad to you. If it comes out, the board will say I’m coercing the trust to cover my guilt.”
“So you sold me again.”
Vanessa’s face crumpled, then hardened. “You survived without me once.”
She left before Claire could answer.
Samuel urged Claire to cancel the activation. Without Vanessa, public failure would validate Daniel’s narrative and expose Evelyn to Roland’s control.
Claire refused.
“The board sees me tomorrow.”
“As whom?”
“As the consultant Daniel thinks he can remove.”
That night, an Arizona judge declared Evelyn competent to choose her own counsel. It should have ended Roland’s guardianship.
Instead, Evelyn vanished during transfer from the independent hospital.
The transport driver was found unconscious. The security footage showed a black Cole Meridian vehicle leaving through an ambulance bay.
Roland called Claire personally.
“Withdraw from the meeting,” he said, “and your mother returns safely.”
Claire gripped the phone. “Let me hear her voice.”
A pause. Then Evelyn said, steady despite the fear beneath it, “Do not trade the truth for me.”
The line disconnected.
Claire stood alone in the dark suite, abandoned by Daniel, apparently betrayed by Vanessa, and unable to trust Samuel.
