Chapter 16 - GET OUT

The private meeting room glowed gold above the Las Vegas Strip.

Water glasses, black folders, and polished silence lined the long table. Roland sat at one end. Daniel stood at the other with Vanessa beside him in white, their matching rings displayed like proof of victory.

Claire entered wearing black.

No one offered her a chair.

Samuel began formally. “The board will consider the Meridian asset sale and the forensic review commissioned by the emergency trust.”

Daniel interrupted. “There is no valid emergency trust representative present.”

“Then the audit should be easy to answer,” Claire said.

She placed one black folder before each director. The schedules inside traced the nineteen million through Daniel’s entities. No accusations, only dates, accounts, and authorization codes.

Daniel did exactly what they predicted. He authenticated the transfers while trying to explain them.

“Those were bridge payments approved by executive authority.”

“Whose authority?” Claire asked.

“Mine, acting for the Cole family.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes so he would not see the satisfaction in them.

“And Desert Haven?” Claire asked. “And the private transport company paid yesterday?”

Roland shut his folder. “This meeting is over.”

Samuel did not move. “The doors remain closed until the vote.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed. A message from the villa security team told him police had breached the property. His face changed.

He crossed the room and seized Claire’s wrist.

“You did this.”

She almost fell as he yanked her away from the table. Her smartphone struck the floor and slid beneath a chair.

Tears filled her eyes—not from fear, but from the unbearable familiarity of his hand controlling her body while strangers watched.

“Get out!” Daniel screamed. “You’re nothing to me!”

No director intervened.

Claire pulled against him. He threw the unopened divorce papers against her chest. Pages scattered across the carpet.

“I replaced you,” he said. “Accept it.”

Vanessa took Daniel’s arm and smiled as rehearsed.

For one dangerous second, Claire wondered whether the performance had become real.

Then she ripped her wrist free.

A red mark circled her skin. One tear escaped, but when she faced Vanessa, her expression settled into stillness.

“You really don’t know, do you?” Claire asked.

Vanessa looked directly at her as though seeing her clearly for the first time.

Her smile vanished.

She gasped and stumbled backward into a leather chair.

“Why is she here?” Vanessa cried.

Daniel grabbed her shoulders. “Who is she to you?”

Vanessa knocked the chair over and pointed at Claire with a violently trembling hand.

The board members rose one by one.

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“Oh my God,” she choked. “She’s my—”

The meeting-room doors opened before she finished.

Detective Torres entered with two federal agents.

Between them, walking under her own strength, was Evelyn Cole.

Roland stood so fast his water glass shattered on the floor.
