Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE BOTH WOMEN

Claire spent the afternoon reconstructing Daniel’s timeline.

He met her twelve years earlier, three weeks after taking her sealed adoption file from the Nevada archives. He proposed within six months. He discouraged every attempt she made to search for her biological family. Then, two years ago, he joined a private equity fund courting Cole Meridian.

That was where he met Vanessa.

The betrayal had not begun with desire. It had begun with research.

Detective Torres obtained hotel footage showing Samuel leaving through a service garage with Roland Cole. Samuel was walking freely, but his face looked terrified.

“Your mysterious shareholder may be Roland,” Torres said.

“Then why hire me to expose his own company?”

“To find out what you know. Or to make you useful before making you guilty.”

Claire received a call from Vanessa’s phone. Daniel spoke.

“Come to the wedding suite alone, or Vanessa signs a statement saying you threatened her life.”

“Let me speak to her.”

“You have thirty minutes.”

Torres wanted Claire to refuse. Instead, they arranged an audio link through a backup device concealed inside Claire’s bracelet.

Daniel opened the suite door. Vanessa sat near the window, pale and rigid. Roland stood behind her.

In person, the chairman’s resemblance to Claire lived not in his features but in a habitual stillness—the way he watched before speaking.

“Ms. Bennett,” Roland said, “you have caused my daughter considerable distress.”

“Which daughter?”

His face remained blank.

Daniel smiled faintly. “This is why no one believes you, Claire.”

Roland placed a document on the table. It was a settlement: five million dollars, withdrawal from the audit, surrender of all copies, permanent confidentiality.

“Sign,” Daniel said, “and our divorce becomes generous.”

“The divorce you forged?”

Vanessa looked sharply at him.

Daniel’s calm broke. “It was an administrative necessity.”

“Bigamy is not administration.”

Roland interrupted. “Take the money.”

Claire touched her bracelet once, the signal for Torres to keep recording.

“And Evelyn Cole?” she asked.

Vanessa stood. “Tell me where my mother is.”

Roland’s eyes flashed. “Your mother died.”

“Then why did you pay Desert Haven for twenty-four years?”

Daniel turned toward Roland. He had not known about the ledger.

For a moment, every alliance in the suite loosened.

Then the bedroom door opened and Samuel Price stepped out.

He was not injured. He carried his laptop under one arm.

Claire felt the floor tilt beneath her.

Samuel avoided her eyes and handed Roland a small receiver.

“She’s transmitting,” he said.

Daniel tore the bracelet from Claire’s wrist.

Torres’s audio link went dead.
