Chapter 9 - THE CAR CRASH

Emily could not let go of one question.

Her mother’s death.

Richard Reed had threatened Laura years earlier.

Then Laura died.

Coincidence?

Margaret insisted there was no evidence otherwise.

Emily requested the crash file.

Single-vehicle accident on wet road.

Laura’s car left a curve.

No mechanical sabotage found.

Toxicology:

negative.

Speed:

slightly above advisory limit.

Seat belt:

yes.

Nothing suspicious.

Then an old witness statement.

A driver behind Laura saw a black SUV nearby.

Emily’s pulse jumped.

Margaret stopped her.

“Black SUVs exist.”

“But—”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice became firm.

“You do not build murder because you need the story to become bigger.”

Emily stared.

Margaret continued:

“Your mother died in a crash. Richard treated her badly. Both can be true without one causing the other.”

Emily cried.

She wanted someone to blame.

Grief loves a defendant.

Margaret refused to invent one.

Then the audit produced something real enough.

Two weeks before Laura died, she emailed a federal nonprofit compliance hotline.

Draft recovered from archived server.

She had started reporting the scholarship transfers again.

Never completed formal submission.

Why?

Unknown.

Then one line:

I am afraid the foundation will retaliate professionally, but I have no evidence anyone intends physical harm.

Laura herself had separated fear from proof.

Emily read it.

Then understood what Margaret had been protecting.

Not Richard.

Truth.
