Chapter 13 - MICHAEL RETURNS TO COURT
A year after the incident, Michael sought expanded parenting time.
He had completed court requirements.
Maintained employment.
Paid support.
Attended therapy.
No further neglect incidents.
Emily opposed immediate expansion but not forever.
The evaluator interviewed Lily.
“What do you want?”
“I want him to stop saying he was only gone three days like that makes it small.”
The evaluator nodded.
Then Lily said:
“I want to know he checks things.”
“What things?”
“Food.”
Pause.
“Babies.”
Pause.
“Me.”
Simple.
Michael was given gradual increases contingent on consistency.
During one supervised family session, he packed the twins’ diaper bag.
Lily watched.
Formula.
Bottles.
Diapers.
Wipes.
Extra clothes.
Then she asked:
“How many bottles?”
Michael answered correctly.
She nodded.
No hug.
No dramatic forgiveness.
Data.
He checked.
That was the beginning.
Then Michael told her:
“You never should have had to be the parent.”
Lily answered:
“I know.”
