Chapter 4 - EMILY
Emily Carter had developed a severe postpartum infection.
She went to Mercy Hospital after collapsing with fever.
Doctors admitted her.
Her husband, Michael Carter, brought her in.
He told staff:
“My sister-in-law has the kids.”
Emily was too ill to verify.
For two days she slept through most calls.
When she woke, Michael told her:
“Everything’s fine.”
Then stopped answering.
Emily assumed he was exhausted.
That assumption protected him.
Now a hospital social worker stood beside her bed.
“Emily, Lily and the twins are safe.”
Emily stared.
“Why are you saying it like that?”
The social worker took her hand.
“Michael has not been home for three days.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“No.”
“Lily has been caring for the babies.”
“No.”
Then:
“She went to a supermarket tonight because the formula ran out.”
Emily began crying.
Not loud.
Broken.
“My baby went outside with two babies?”
The social worker nodded.
“In the cold?”
“Yes.”
Emily tried to sit up.
Pain stopped her.
“I’m leaving.”
The nurse intervened.
Not forcefully.
“You are not medically ready.”
Emily cried harder.
Then asked:
“Where’s Michael?”
No one knew.
The police had called.
His phone went straight to voicemail.
Then Emily said something that changed the investigation.
“He took my debit card.”
Rachel, on speaker, asked:
“When?”
“The night I was admitted.”
“Did you authorize that?”
“He said he needed it for groceries.”
The account had held $1,460.
By morning:
$312.
Not theft automatically.
Married couple.
Shared account.
But the spending mattered.
Gas.
Restaurant.
Motel in Monroeville.
Cash withdrawal.
Then another charge:
a jewelry store.
Emily stared at the transaction list.
“No.”
Daniel, who had remained involved only as a witness and through his company’s cooperation, heard about the case the next day.
He did not know Michael Carter.
But the address on one transaction caught his attention.
Mercer Ridge Hotel.
