Chapter 3 - THE TRIP AARON DIDN'T WANT

Ethan called Helen back the next morning.
She agreed to meet.
No family audience.
No Richard.
No Margaret.
Helen brought an old envelope.
Inside were printed emails from twelve years earlier.
Aaron to Richard:
Weather service is warning against mountain travel after 6 p.m. I’m not taking Blake up there tonight.
Richard:
The family dinner is tomorrow morning. Stop being dramatic.
Aaron:
Road crews are already closing sections.
Richard:
Your grandfather made that drive in worse.
Aaron:
Then Grandpa was stupid.
Ethan stared.
He had never seen those messages.
Helen continued.
Richard had planned a family gathering at the cabin.
A tradition.
Aaron wanted to cancel.
Blake was eleven months old.
Aaron’s wife, Melissa, had the flu and stayed home.
Aaron initially planned to stay too.
Richard accused him of using fatherhood as an excuse to avoid family obligations.
Then one final email.
Richard:
If you don’t come, don’t bother asking me again about the money for your business.
Ethan looked up.
“What money?”
Aaron was trying to start a small construction-management company.
Richard had promised to lend him $80,000.
Aaron depended on it for equipment and insurance.
Helen said:
“Your father used the money to force him to go.”
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
“But Blake wasn’t in the car.”
“No.”
That surprised him.
Helen explained.
At the last minute Melissa refused to let Aaron take the baby in the storm.
Aaron went alone.
He never reached the cabin.
His truck left the road on Blackstone Pass.
Ethan stared at the emails.
“Dad caused the accident?”
Helen shook her head.
“No.”
Weather.
Road conditions.
Aaron’s decision to drive.
Many factors.
“But Richard pushed him to take a risk.”
“Yes.”
“Did anyone know?”
“I did.”
“Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Melissa?”
Helen looked away.
“She blamed Richard.”
Then Ethan asked:
“What happened to her?”
Melissa died three years later from an unrelated illness.
Blake was four.
Richard and Margaret became his legal caregivers with court approval because Melissa had named them.
Ethan knew that.
What he did not know was what Richard promised at Melissa’s hospital bedside.
Helen handed him another page.
A handwritten note.
Richard:
Blake will never want for anything. I will make sure Aaron’s son always comes first.
Ethan stared.
The words were not legal.
Not part of a will.
May you like
They were a promise born from guilt.
And Richard had spent twelve years making the entire family live inside it.
