Chapter 7 - THE DELETED VOICEMAIL
The transcript was brief.
Ethan—
Dad’s being Dad. I’m turning around. Don’t let him tell you I’m quitting on the business. We’ll figure something else out.
Then:
Tell Mom I’m not coming.
That was all.
No dramatic goodbye.
No prophecy.
Aaron expected to survive.
Ethan read it three times.
“Why would Dad delete this?”
Helen answered:
“Because it destroyed his version.”
Aaron was not heroically pushing through for family.
He was turning around.
He rejected Richard’s pressure.
The crash happened while he was attempting to reverse course.
Ethan felt anger rise.
“He spent twelve years saying Aaron died proving family comes first.”
“Yes.”
“When Aaron’s last message was literally saying no.”
“Yes.”
The entire moral foundation of Blake’s favoritism was built on a lie.
Then Ethan asked:
“How did you get this transcript?”
Helen explained the family used a shared business phone account at the time.
Voicemail backups were retained for billing litigation involving another number.
Years later, during a records cleanup, Helen found archived transcripts.
She confronted Richard.
He begged her not to tell Blake.
“Why?”
“He said the truth would make Blake hate him.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“So instead he made everyone else worship Blake.”
Helen did not answer.
Then Sarah called.
June was crying.
“Blake posted something.”
Ethan rushed home.
A family group chat message from Blake:
June ruined my family and now Uncle Ethan wants Grandpa’s money.
Several cousins had already responded.
One:
What happened?
Another:
That’s messed up.
June had seen it.
She whispered:
“I didn’t ruin anything.”
Ethan hugged her.
“No.”

But the story had escaped the house.
Richard’s private guilt was now becoming public blame aimed at a ten-year-old.
