Chapter 8 - THE VIDEO FROM THE GARAGE
The Whitmore garage had a security camera.
Preston said it was broken.
Police believed him initially.
Then cloud billing records showed active storage.
Video had been deleted.
By whom?
Account login from Caroline’s phone.
She stared.
“I didn’t delete it.”
Device records showed an automated credential token.
Could have been remote use.
Then a recovery specialist restored partial footage.
No audio.
Enough.
Noah tied.
Preston raising belt.
Caroline present.
Grant breaking in.
Grant striking Preston.
Grant freeing Noah.
Toolbox thrown across empty floor space.
The video did not make Grant look calm.
It made him look desperate.
That helped.
Then the beginning of the video.
Preston setting up a camera tripod separately.
Why?
He had planned to record Noah’s “discipline session.”
Purpose?
Training evidence.
He wanted footage to show Noah’s “behavioral intervention” to a consultant supporting trust reimbursement.
The cruelty was documentation.
Grant nearly vomited.
Then one recovered clip from earlier in the week.
Noah forced to stand in the garage while Preston questioned him.
“Who makes the rules?”
“Grandpa.”
“Who pays for everything?”
“Grandpa.”
“Who knows what’s best?”
“Grandpa.”
Caroline enters.
Does not stop it.
That hurt her case badly.
Then she did something unexpected.
She stopped defending Preston.
Not instantly noble.
Strategic first.
Her lawyer told her the evidence was overwhelming.
Then maybe conscience arrived.
She gave investigators access to her father’s emails.
Preston’s attorney called it betrayal.
Caroline said:
“He used me.”
Grant heard and became furious.
“You used Noah.”
She cried.
“I know.”
Good.
No redirect.
Then the emails.
Preston to Caroline:
GRANT’S TEMPER IS OUR SAFETY NET.
If Grant reacts violently, they could challenge his trustee status.
There.
That was the deeper plan.
Provoke Grant.
Document Grant.
Remove Grant.
Control Noah’s trust.
The garage incident had been abuse.
It had also been bait.
Preston expected Grant to explode.
