Chapter 9 - THE TEMPER PRESTON COUNTED ON
Preston’s plan depended on one fact:
Grant was predictable when enraged.
He had built a reputation.
At work, Grant once fired a subcontractor in front of fifty people while screaming.
He later apologized.
Still.
At home, he slammed doors.
Threw a phone once.
Never at anyone.
But Preston collected stories.
Statements.
Texts.
Workplace complaints.
Then he told Caroline:
If Grant ever loses control around Noah, the bank will remove him as trustee.
Not automatically.
But possible.
That gave Caroline motive to tolerate a situation designed to provoke him.
She thought she was protecting herself in a coming custody war.
Then Grant asked:
“Did you know Dad planned the garage?”
Caroline shook her head.
“I knew he was going to punish Noah.”
“Did you know about the rope?”
“No.”
“Did you know about the belt?”
“Yes.”
Grant looked away.
That was enough.
Then:
“Why didn’t you stop him?”
Caroline answered:
“Because I thought if I challenged him, he’d stop helping me.”
There.
Money again.
Her father had guaranteed debt.
Paid bills.
Promised legal support.
Fed her fear.
She chose his support over Noah’s safety.
The court changed visitation.
More restrictive again.
Caroline accepted.
Then Preston’s trust scheme fully emerged.
If Grant were removed:
bank co-trustee would need successor.
The forged delegation attempted to position Preston administratively before any formal removal.
Then invoices could flow.
Not all to him.
Some to related companies.
Some to Caroline’s debt.
He called it family stabilization.
Classic.
Then investigators found a draft petition to declare Grant “financially and emotionally unsuitable” as trustee.
Prepared before the garage incident.
Evidence list included:
rage episode expected.
Expected.
They had anticipated his reaction.
Grant stared.
Then Rebecca said:
“Do not make their prediction true again.”
He nodded.
That line became his discipline.
Not Caroline’s.
His.
No more explosive performances.
