Chapter 1 - SHE KILLED MOMMY

The decorative spear left Evelyn Kensington’s hands before Thomas Vance understood what she was doing.

“Toby!”

His three-year-old grandson screamed.

“GRANDPA!”

Thomas lunged, caught Toby around the waist, and yanked him backward.

The spear struck the carpeted hotel hallway and skidded beneath a table of white flowers.

Toby clung to Thomas’s black wedding coat.

Thomas pulled him behind his body and turned on Evelyn.

“What the hell are you doing?!”

Evelyn stood in her white lace wedding dress, breathing hard.

“Thomas—listen.”

He crossed the distance and slapped her.

“Why are you trying to hurt him?!”

Evelyn recoiled.

“He’s lying to you!”

Thomas dropped to one knee.

“Toby. What happened?”

Toby buried his face against him.

Evelyn rushed forward and grabbed Thomas’s arm.

“DON’T LISTEN TO HIM!”

Thomas tore free and shoved her back.

“Stay away from him.”

Bridesmaids had begun gathering near the hallway doors.

Guests whispered.

Thomas ignored all of them.

Toby pointed at Evelyn.

“She’s bad.”

Evelyn’s face went white.

Thomas held Toby’s shoulders gently.

“What did she do?”

Toby cried harder.

Then the words came out broken and small.

“She killed Mommy.”

Thomas froze.

His daughter-in-law Natalie had been dead for eleven months.

Official cause:

a catastrophic asthma attack during a charity gala.

Toby had been there.

He had been barely two.

Thomas had always assumed he remembered almost nothing.

Evelyn shook her head violently.

“He doesn’t know what he’s saying.”

Toby screamed:

“Blue medicine! She took Mommy blue medicine!”

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

Her terror deepened.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Then Toby added one more sentence.

“She put it in her shiny bag.”

Thomas knew the bag.

Evelyn had carried the same silver evening purse the night Natalie died.

And suddenly the spear lying on the carpet no longer looked like panic.

It looked like an attempt to stop a child from finishing a memory.
