THE BOY IN THE WHITE ROOM

The secure video showed a fifteen-year-old boy standing inside a white medical room.
Dark hair.
Leo’s eyes.
“My name is Leon Hughes,” he said. “They told me Cynthia Calloway was my mother.”
Cynthia could not breathe.
The file described another embryo from Thomas’s batch.
A fourth child.
Raised under a derivative name.
Then Leon held up Captain Barnaby.
Not a similar toy.
The same repaired tear near the elephant’s ear.
Cynthia looked at the stuffed elephant in her own hands.
Identical.
One had to be false.
Or the toy had been switched before the funeral.
Leon continued.
“They told me Leo survived the hospital.”
“No,” Cynthia whispered.
Lena warned the video could be synthetic. Continuum had used deepfakes before.
But the medical signal was live.
One child.
One Colorado facility.
One guardian name.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
Cynthia turned.
The hospital elevator opened.
Dr. Reed stepped out holding a black travel bag.
His face turned white when he saw the map.
“There is something I should have told you fifteen years ago,” he said.
Cynthia’s grief became still again.
“What?”
“Leo’s body was removed from the ICU before the state identification team arrived.”
“Why?”
“A federal medical order.”
“Signed by whom?”
“Corbin Hughes.”
Corbin had claimed he knew nothing after Leo died.
Dr. Reed continued.
“The child returned to the room two hours later. Same pajamas. Same bracelet. His face was covered because of postmortem preparation.”
“You signed the death certificate.”
“I signed for the child I treated.”
“Did you identify the body?”
“No.”
The flatline was real.
Leo had died in front of her.
But what happened afterward was uncertain.
Continuum may have switched the body to hide another child, alter genetic evidence, or create leverage years later.
Leon might be Leo’s embryo sibling.
Or he might have been raised to believe he was Leo.
Either way, he was a child trapped inside someone else’s grief.
Cynthia refused to rush to Colorado alone.
She called federal investigators, Lena, independent counsel for Leon, and a medical identity team.
Dr. Reed surrendered his travel bag.
Inside was an old hospital transfer form.
The receiving physician was Dr. Julian Mercer.
The same fertility doctor who created the embryo batch.
And the listed destination was not Colorado.
