Chapter 2 - NOTHING WAS MISSING

Hotel security arrived.
So did corporate security.
Margaret insisted Ethan had reached toward her handbag.
The handbag was examined in her presence.
Wallet.
Phone.
Jewelry case.
Cash envelope.
Everything there.
“What did he take?” security asked.
Margaret changed her wording.
“He was trying to.”
“What did you see him reach for?”
“My bag.”
Two guests contradicted her.
Ethan had passed behind Margaret because the aisle was narrow.
His hand brushed her shoulder.
Nothing more.
Daniel stood nearby, face pale.
He tried to speak to Ethan.
“Look, I reacted because—”
Ethan raised one hand.
“Not now.”
Daniel stopped.
That was new for him.
In his division, people usually let him finish.
Ethan gave a statement.
So did Margaret.
So did witnesses.
He did not ask Helen to fire anyone.
He did not invoke rank.
He did not threaten Daniel’s career.
He asked for the incident to be documented exactly as it would be if he were any other employee.
That request changed the room.
Several catering workers exchanged looks.
Ethan noticed.
One woman in a black service uniform was crying quietly near the kitchen entrance.
Not because of him.
Because Margaret had called him:
poor trash.
Ethan asked corporate security:
“Has Mrs. Whitmore attended company events before?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“Many.”
“Any prior incidents?”
The security manager hesitated.
Daniel heard the hesitation.
“What?”
The manager looked at Helen.
Helen said:
“Answer.”
“Three documented complaints involving staff.”
Margaret snapped:
“That’s irrelevant.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What kind of complaints?”
The manager read from his tablet.
“Missing bracelet.”
“Missing cash.”
“Missing phone.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Were any proven stolen?”
Another hesitation.
“No.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
Margaret folded her arms.
“They were found later.”
Ethan asked:
“What happened to the employees accused?”
The security manager looked uncomfortable.
“One contractor was removed from the property.”
“One server was suspended pending investigation.”
“One janitorial employee’s vendor badge was canceled.”
Ethan went still.
Three accusations.
No theft proven.
Three workers suffered consequences anyway.

Then the crying catering employee raised her hand.
“My sister was the server.”
