Chapter 9 - THE BOARD REVIEW

Ethan could recommend discipline.

He could not personally decide everything.

That mattered.

Northbridge formed:

an independent HR review,

internal audit,

outside employment counsel,

and an operations remediation team.

Daniel remained in role temporarily but lost unilateral authority over disciplinary removals.

Margaret was banned from company-sponsored events during review.

She called Ethan.

“You’re punishing me because I didn’t know who you were.”

Ethan answered:

“No.”

“You would never do this if I had slapped a waiter.”

There was a pause.

Then Ethan said:

“That sentence is exactly why this review exists.”

Margaret hung up.

The board reviewed Daniel’s performance.

Good:

revenue,

client retention,

staffing efficiency,

event execution.

Bad:

complaint governance,

manager fear,

status-weighted discipline,

poor documentation.

Mixed:

employee turnover was slightly above company average but not catastrophic.

No fake “entire division was evil.”

Then Angela testified.

She said Daniel never instructed:

“Believe rich people.”

He said:

“Protect the guest.”

But every manager learned what happened when the guest was powerful.

Questioning them required courage.

Moving a server required an email.

Systems favor the easiest action.

Then a current manager, Owen Brooks, admitted:

“I stopped asking who was right. I asked who would complain louder.”

Daniel covered his face.

That sentence hurt him more than any accusation.

Then Ethan saw the compensation committee file.

Daniel was due for promotion to Executive Vice President.

The promotion packet cited:

exceptional executive satisfaction metrics.

Those metrics included the system now under review.

His promotion was paused.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“You did this.”

Ethan answered:

“The evidence did.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Easy for you to say. You’re sitting above me.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Then imagine being Maria Ortiz.”
