Chapter 10 - THE DAY BEFORE EMILY ARRIVED
Emily’s return was supposed to be a surprise.
She told no one except a cousin who picked her up from the airport.
The day before, Margaret found the full ledger.
Vanessa had left it on the dining table beside bank statements.
Margaret read the total.
$286,400.
Then saw a note:
House equity adjustment after Mom’s death/transfer.
She confronted Vanessa.
“What does this mean?”
Vanessa said:
“It means I’m not walking away with nothing after everything I did.”
“The house is split between you and Emily in my will.”
“I know.”
Margaret stared.
“Then what adjustment?”
Vanessa had been calculating that her unpaid care should be treated as a claim against Margaret’s estate before division.
Not automatically unlawful to assert a claim later.
But there was no contract supporting most of it.
Margaret said:
“You are not charging your sister for being here.”
Vanessa snapped:
“She wasn’t here.”
Then Margaret said the sentence that broke something.
“Emily sent money. You sent invoices nobody agreed to.”
Vanessa slapped the ledger shut.
Margaret reached for the phone.
Vanessa grabbed it.
The argument shifted.
Not from money to violence instantly.
First:
accusations.
Then:
old grievances.
Then:
their father.
Margaret said Vanessa always competed with Emily.
Vanessa said Margaret always used Emily as proof that Vanessa should have done more.
Margaret denied it.
Vanessa started crying.

That was when the conflict became physical.
