Chapter 4 - VANESSA STAYED
Vanessa had stayed in Colorado.
That mattered.
After their father died, Margaret began struggling with:
arthritis,
driving at night,
stairs,
heavy shopping,
and occasional dizziness.
Nothing that made her legally incompetent.
Enough to need help.
Vanessa became the person who:
drove to appointments,
picked up prescriptions,
waited for plumbers,
handled insurance calls,
brought groceries,
changed light bulbs,
and sat through long afternoons when Margaret was lonely.
Emily knew that.
She admired it.
She also benefited from it.
Every time Emily remained overseas after another promotion, part of the decision rested on one thought:
Vanessa is there.
That was real labor.
Unpaid labor.
Invisible labor.
The problem was not that Vanessa believed it had value.
The problem was what she eventually decided value entitled her to take.
Vanessa had a life outside Margaret too.
She worked in regional sales for a flooring manufacturer.
She dated.
She had friends.
She once planned to move to Denver.
Then Margaret had a fall.
No fracture.
Still frightening.
Vanessa renewed her apartment lease nearby instead.
No one asked her to.

Sacrifice is most dangerous when everybody benefits from it but nobody names it.
