Chapter 12 - EMILY'S CALLS

After Margaret was safe, Emily reviewed six years of messages.

Pattern.

She had asked:

Can I talk to Mom?

Vanessa:

She’s sleeping.

Another:

Mom hung up fast Sunday. Everything okay?

Vanessa:

She gets overwhelmed.

Another:

I can fly home.

Vanessa:

Don’t. She’ll feel guilty.

Emily had accepted those answers because they suited her life.

That realization hurt.

Vanessa manipulated access.

True.

Emily also enjoyed believing the person on the ground knew best.

She wanted to be a good daughter from far away.

Transfers.

Calls.

Gifts.

Planning.

All useful.

Not presence.

Emily did not need to quit her career to prove love.

But she did need to admit distance made ignorance easier.

Emily had her own assignment.

List what money had allowed her not to do.

She wrote:

Book flights.

Ask Vanessa if she was okay.

Ask Mom if she wanted outside help.

Sit through medical appointments.

See the house getting harder to manage.

Notice how tired everyone was.

The exercise felt unfair.

Money had helped.

Real help.

But it had also become emotional outsourcing.

Emily could admit both without pretending she should have abandoned her life abroad.

Then she found messages from Margaret too.

Drafts never sent.

Vanessa had not written them.

Margaret had.

I wish you would come home but I don’t want to ask.

Another:

Your sister is tired.

Deleted before sending.

Margaret had protected Vanessa from Emily.

Vanessa had protected Margaret from Emily.

Everyone had become an editor.

No one was communicating directly.
