Chapter 14 - THE FIRST TIME CAROLINA SAID NO SAFELY
Gracie was ten when the moment happened.
She wanted to attend a sleepover.
Carolina said no.
Gracie screamed:
“You never let me do anything!”
Old danger.
Old dynamic.
Sawyer was not there.
Carolina felt herself become angry.
Later she described it in therapy.
Heat.
Chest tight.
Need for immediate obedience.
Two years earlier she would have grabbed.
Shouted.
Threatened.
Instead she said:
“I’m too angry to talk right now.”
Walked into the kitchen.
Set a timer.
Returned ten minutes later.
Gracie still angry.
Carolina still said no.
No one got hurt.
Gracie complained to Sawyer afterward.
“Mom is so unfair.”
Sawyer smiled.
“Maybe.”
“She said no.”
“That happens.”
Gracie looked suspicious.
“You’re supposed to agree with me.”
“I used to.”
“Yeah.”
“That wasn’t always helpful.”
Gracie groaned.
