Chapter 16 - SAWYER APOLOGIZED TO CAROLINA
Not for leaving.
Not for protecting Gracie.
For his own part.
They met after a school event.
Gracie was inside with friends.
Sawyer said:
“I owe you something.”
Carolina raised an eyebrow.
“Money?”
He almost laughed.
“No.”
He apologized for years of absence.
For undermining rules remotely.
For using work as the excuse for not engaging with domestic conflict.
For dismissing Carolina when she said she was overwhelmed.
Carolina listened.
Then:
“Thank you.”
No reunion.
No:
If only.
No attempt to make her violence his fault.
That mattered.
She said:
“I should have asked for help before I became someone Gracie feared.”
“Yes.”
“I thought needing help meant losing.”
Sawyer nodded.
“Me too.”
They had been more alike than either wanted.
Different expression.
Same fear of weakness.
That insight did not restore marriage.
