Chapter 12 - USING THE BENEFIT CORRECTLY
Bernice’s schedule changed.
St. Anne added two rotating overnight weekends each month.
Gideon could cover most.
But one weekend his NorthStar planning conference required travel.
Bernice needed childcare.
Her first instinct:
swap shifts.
Then she stopped.
NightBridge existed for this.
Could she use it without feeling like she was repeating the past?
Hannah Lee helped.
Provider:
licensed overnight sitter, Monica Reed.
Hours:
7 p.m.–7 a.m.
Actual.
Documented.
Monica met Roger twice before the night.
Roger liked her.
On the first overnight, Bernice told him:
“Monica is the grown-up taking care of you tonight.”
Roger asked:
“Actually?”
Bernice smiled.
“Actually.”
At 11:40 p.m., Roger woke.
Monica sat with him.
Read one book.
He went back to sleep.

Not required by NightBridge.
Monica documented it because she kept care notes.
Bernice read them after work and cried.
A benefit could be used correctly.
Money was not contaminated by Gideon’s misuse.

Bernice almost laughed at how ordinary it was.
Then Gideon asked:
“Did it feel weird?”
“Yes.”
“Worth it?”
“Yes.”
They were speaking more easily now.
Still separated.
Then Celina got a full-time design job.
She no longer needed side money.
She repaid the last $200 of her NightBridge obligation ahead of schedule.
She did not tell Bernice immediately.
Why?
She had learned that repayment did not buy relationship access.

Then she sent Bernice a message:
I’m done repaying the program. No need to respond. I just wanted you to know.
Bernice replied:
Thanks for telling me.
Not:
I forgive you.
Not:
come over.
Just information.
Then Roger turned six.
At his birthday, he invited Celina.
Bernice asked:
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She makes funny elephants.”
Celina drew cartoons for him.
That was apparently enough.
Gideon attended too.
Separate arrival.
Separate departure.
No family performance.
Then Roger opened a gift from Celina:
a small book of elephant drawings.
One page showed an elephant sitting outside a door.
Roger frowned.
Celina panicked.
“I can take that page out.”
Roger looked closer.
The elephant was eating popcorn.
He laughed.
“No. He’s waiting for the movie.”
Meaning had changed.
Then Bernice received an email from NorthStar compliance.
Not about Gideon.
A voluntary disclosure copy.
Gideon had reported another old relationship.
A former vendor contact had paid for a conference dinner three years earlier.
Value:
$84.
Bernice smiled.
He had become almost comically cautious.
Then later he admitted:
“I think I’m overcorrecting.”
“Yes.”
“What do I do?”
“Use judgment.”
He groaned.
The family’s hardest skill.
Then an unexpected letter came from St. Anne.
NightBridge’s insurer requested recovery from Gideon.
Not because of benefit repayment.
Legal review costs:
