Chloe filed for divorce.
Dylan asked for counseling.
She refused reconciliation counseling.
Agreed to one closure session.
He said:
“I loved you.”
She answered:
“I believe you.”
That almost hurt him more.
Then:
“You also loved being admired by Brooke.”
“Yes.”
“You loved avoiding conflict.”
“Yes.”
“You loved the version of me you could describe as ambitious instead of hurt.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
Then Chloe asked:
“What do you think you lost first?”
“Our marriage.”
“No.”
He looked up.
“My trust.”
Closer.
Then:
“Your ability to tell yourself you were a good man because nothing had forced you to choose yet.”
Silence.
That was the answer.
Professionally, Dylan was not fired merely for adultery.
Mercer Hospitality had no morality clause covering private affairs.
But the public restaurant incident and his use of company hospitality resources for some meetings triggered an ethics review.
He reimbursed several expenses.
Lost a promotion.
Not his career.
Charles refused to protect him from that review.
Dylan accused his father of choosing optics.
Charles answered:
“No. I’m choosing process.”
For once, the Mercer family was learning the distinction.
Then Chloe moved out of the penthouse.
Not because Dylan owned it.
Joint marital asset.
Temporary arrangement.
