Chapter 14 - JACOB'S APARTMENT

Two years after Bell & Vale, Jacob had an apartment.

Studio.

Third floor.

Elevator worked most days.

One window faced an alley.

He loved it.

He taped the lease inside a kitchen cabinet.

Not for symbolism.

Because he lost papers.

Brooke visited every other Sunday.

Sometimes they fought.

Good.

Real relationships contain disagreement.

She brought groceries once.

Jacob said:

“I can buy my own.”

She answered:

“I know. I still brought soup.”

He accepted.

Then Chloe visited once.

Not as family.

Jacob had asked to return a document.

He showed her a framed photograph.

Brooke at thirteen.

School orchestra.

Cheap black dress.

Huge smile.

“She was happy sometimes,” Jacob said.

Chloe looked at him.

“I never thought she wasn’t.”

Jacob nodded.

People simplify villains too easily.

Then he asked:

“How’s Dylan?”

“Ask Dylan.”

He laughed.

Good boundary.

Then Jacob said:

“I’m glad you left.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I spent too much of my life believing staying through damage proved loyalty.”

That line connected everything.

Jacob stayed too long in a collapsing job because leaving felt like surrender.

Brooke hid him because truth threatened status.

Dylan stayed in marriage while building another relationship because decision felt costly.

Charles protected systems by filtering trouble.

Different people.

Same confusion.

Loyalty without truth becomes delay.

Then Jacob looked around his tiny apartment.

“I’m getting better at leaving.”

May you like

Chloe smiled.

“So am I.”
