Chapter 5 - BEFORE THE BIRTH

Margaret had started before there was anything to document.
The first email read:
Ethan, I’m worried Claire is underestimating how difficult the first weeks will be. Please don’t let pride stop you from accepting help.
Reasonable.
The second:
She seems anxious about anyone holding the baby. Keep an eye on whether that becomes controlling.
Claire stared.
“I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant.”
Ethan rubbed his face.
“I know.”
The third:
If she gets overwhelmed, remember that exhaustion can distort judgment. You may need to step in before she admits it.
Claire pushed the laptop away.
“She was building the explanation before Emma existed.”
Grace kept reading.
Most emails were framed as concern.
No direct accusation.
No overt threat.
Margaret was careful.
She never wrote:
Claire is unstable.
She wrote:
Watch for signs.
She never wrote:
Take the baby away.
She wrote:
You may have to protect both of them if Claire cannot recognize her limits.
Ethan’s replies were short.
Thanks.
I’ll watch.
She’s doing okay.
Please don’t push.
Then, after Emma came home:
I think you were right that she’s more overwhelmed than she admits.
Claire went still.
Ethan closed his eyes.
“That was after you fell asleep holding the bottle.”
Claire snapped:
“I fell asleep for two minutes while you were sitting beside me.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew it then.”
“I was scared.”
Claire looked at him.
There it was.
Fear.
Margaret had not needed Ethan to hate Claire.
She only needed him afraid.
Grace opened the last email.
Sent the morning of the bathroom incident.
Margaret:
Today may be the day Ethan finally sees what I’ve been trying to tell him.
Claire’s stomach turned.
May you like
No event had happened yet.
Yet Margaret was already expecting proof.
