Chapter 7 - THE UNSENT REPORT
The draft was chilling because it was incomplete.
Emma found in unsafe bathroom situation while Claire upstairs. Claire confused about sequence of events. Recommend urgent evaluation.
Grace read it aloud once.
Then stopped.
Claire felt physically sick.
“She planned it.”
Ethan stood abruptly.
“No.”
Claire stared at him.
He corrected himself.
“I mean—she planned the story.”
Grace nodded.
“We still need to be precise about what she intended physically.”
Claire’s anger exploded.
“She put our newborn in a toilet.”
“Yes.”
“Why are we debating intent?”
“Because the difference between staging a dangerous scene and intending Emma to die matters legally.”
Claire hated the sentence.
But she understood it.
Margaret’s lawyer claimed she had placed Emma there only for seconds to create “proof” that Claire was inattentive, intending to immediately remove her.
That did not make the act safe.
Or sane.
Or legal.
But it was not the same allegation as attempted murder.
The bathroom evidence mattered.
The toilet contained clean water from a recent flush.
No cleaning chemicals.
Emma had been wrapped.
The plunger never touched her.
Claire had arrived almost immediately.
None of that made the act acceptable.
It did affect what could be proven about intended harm.
Then investigators found something else.
The bathroom smart speaker had stored a voice-command history.
At 2:07 p.m., Margaret said:
“Set a timer for three minutes.”
At 2:09:
“Cancel timer.”
At 2:10:
“Message Ethan later.”
At 2:11:
“Delete that.”
The bathroom incident began around 2:12.
Claire returned home at 2:13 because she had forgotten her wallet.
Margaret had believed Claire would be gone at least twenty minutes.
What was the three-minute timer for?
