Chapter 1 - THE FACE BENEATH THE FACE

Ella Whitmore had imagined heartbreak as something quiet.
She was wrong.
It sounded like Ethan’s voice cracking in the rain.
“Don’t marry him.”
His fingers were wrapped around hers so tightly she could feel his pulse.
They stood beneath the stone arch outside the church garden where they had first kissed two years earlier. Rain darkened Ethan’s charcoal coat. Ella’s hair clung to her cheeks. Her eyes were already swollen from crying.
She had rehearsed the sentence all morning.
It still nearly killed her.
“We’re breaking up.”
Ethan stared at her.
“No.”
Ella pulled her hand free.
His fingers closed on air.
“Ella.”
She took one step backward.
“My family is drowning.”
“I can help.”
“You can’t.”
“I’ll find a way.”
“You always say that.”
He flinched.
She hated herself for it.
Ethan was thirty-two, brilliant, proud, and still rebuilding his life after his father’s company collapsed. He had no inherited fortune. No family estate. No miracle.
Ella’s mother had medical debt.
Her younger brother’s tuition was overdue.
Their house was three weeks from foreclosure.
Then Victor Ashbourne arrived.
Seventy-eight.
Widowed.
Reclusive.
A billionaire whose name sat on hospitals, museums, foundations, and half the skyline.
He offered Ella marriage.
Not romance.
A legal arrangement.
In return, he would clear her family’s debts, fund her brother’s education, and guarantee her mother’s treatment.
Ella said no.
Then the foreclosure notice came.
Then her mother collapsed.
Then Ella said yes.
Ethan stepped toward her.
“Tell me you love him.”
She could not.
“Tell me.”
Ella’s mouth trembled.
He understood before she spoke.
His face broke.
“Don’t do this.”
She forced herself to look cold.
Because if she looked like herself, she would stay.
“We’re breaking up.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“DON’T MARRY HIM!”
Ella turned away before he could see her collapse.
Two days later, wedding bells exploded across the Ashbourne estate.
The ceremony moved like a fever.
White dress.
Gold ring.
Crystal chandeliers.
Strangers applauding.
Champagne lifted beneath paintings worth more than Ella’s childhood home.
Victor Ashbourne stood beside her.
Frail.
Silver-haired.
Stooped slightly.
His hands shook when he placed the ring on her finger.
Ella forced a smile.
Her mother cried with relief.
Her brother looked ashamed.
Somewhere inside Ella, Ethan’s voice kept repeating:
Don’t marry him.
The wedding ended.
The mansion swallowed everyone.
Guests left after midnight.
Ella changed out of the heavy veil but kept the dress on because she could not make herself move any further.
She walked into the garden alone.
Moonlight silvered the hedges.
Then she saw her husband.
Victor stood beneath an old oak tree.
Except he did not look frail anymore.
His back was straight.
His shoulders were wider than they had been at dinner.
Ella stopped.
He looked around.
Nervous.
Then lifted both hands to his face.
Ella’s heartbeat exploded.
His fingers moved beneath his jaw.
Then pulled.
Skin shifted.
Ella stared.
The elderly face stretched.
Lifted.
Peeled away.
She screamed.
“OH MY GOD!”
The silver-haired mask came free.
It dropped into Victor’s hands.
Beneath it was a younger man.
Dark hair.
Strong jaw.
Muscular shoulders.
A face Ella knew better than her own.
The mask fell into the grass.
Ella’s hands flew to her mouth.
May you like
Her entire body began shaking.
“ETHAN?!”
