Chapter 4 - WHY ETHAN BECAME VICTOR
The marriage condition created another problem.
Victor Ashbourne was dead.
Yet his attorneys had already announced that “Victor” planned to remarry as part of a private estate restructuring.
Why?
Because before his death, Victor had built an elaborate transition plan designed to confuse competitors until the trust changed hands.
He had suffered from advanced illness for almost a year.
Public appearances were rare.
Most meetings happened remotely.
Very few outsiders had seen him closely.
After Victor died, family counsel delayed public disclosure for forty-eight hours while markets and lenders were stabilized.
Then an internal dispute began.
Ethan’s uncle, Marcus Ashbourne, challenged the will.
He claimed Ethan was unfit.
He argued Victor intended the control trust to pass to a committee instead.
The family lawyers warned Ethan:
If the marriage clause was triggered publicly before the litigation settled, Marcus would know exactly when Ethan’s control vested.
He could move against the board.
So they created a bizarre solution.
A staged private wedding under Victor’s public identity.
The legal documents themselves named Ethan.
The guests were mostly trust employees and family allies who knew the arrangement.
Ella had been kept deliberately ignorant.
She stood from the library table.
“You’re telling me everyone at my wedding knew?”
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Not everyone.”
“My mother?”
“No.”
“My brother?”
“No.”
“The officiant?”
“Yes.”
“The attorneys?”
“Yes.”
“The staff?”
“Some.”
Ella looked physically sick.
“This is insane.”
“Yes.”
“You humiliated me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I sold myself.”
