Chapter 5 - THE MONEY THAT SAVED HER FAMILY
Ella’s mother’s hospital bills had been paid three days before the wedding.
Her brother’s tuition had been covered.
The family mortgage was current.
Ella assumed Victor Ashbourne had done it.
Technically, the payments came from Ashbourne Family Assistance Foundation.
But the authorization originated elsewhere.
Ethan’s personal trust.
A small one.
Not the billion-dollar control trust.
His own.
He had nearly emptied it.
Ella discovered that from attorney Mara Chen.
She was the first outsider Ethan allowed Ella to question alone.
Mara explained:
“Ethan did not have access to the Ashbourne control assets before marriage.”
“How much did he have?”
“Enough to live comfortably if he wanted.”
“He told me he was broke.”
“He told you his family money was unavailable.”
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
Mara did not protect him.
Good.
Ella continued.
“Did he pay my mother’s bills before I agreed to marry Victor?”
“Yes.”
Ella froze.
“When?”
“The transfer authorization was signed the morning you broke up with him.”
Her eyes filled.
“So I didn’t need to marry anyone.”
Mara hesitated.
“For the immediate medical bills, no.”
Ella stood abruptly.
Ethan had known.
He watched her walk away.
He let her believe her mother’s life depended on marrying an old man.
And he already paid.
That betrayal cut deeper than the disguise.
When she confronted him, Ethan did not argue.
“I was afraid if I told you, you’d refuse the wedding.”
“I WOULD HAVE.”
“I know.”
“Then you manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
Ella slapped him.
He took it.
