Chapter 1 - MY MOTHER SAID YOU WOULD COME

Emily Carter smelled the smoke before she saw the fire.
She was driving home from an overnight shift at St. Matthew’s Rehabilitation Center when traffic slowed along a quiet suburban street outside Columbus.
At first, she thought it was construction.
Then she saw people running.
A woman stood barefoot in the road screaming into her phone.
A man in a bathrobe was dragging a garden hose across the lawn.
Black smoke rolled above the rooftops.
Emily pulled over.
The house at the end of the cul-de-sac was burning.
Not smoking.
Burning.
Flames punched through the upstairs windows, bright orange against the gray morning.
Someone shouted:
“Fire department’s coming!”
Another voice screamed:
“There’s a kid inside!”
Emily stopped.
“What?”
A neighbor pointed toward the second floor.
“Boy! Ten years old! He can’t walk!”
Then Emily heard him.
Faint through the roar.
“HELP ME!”
Every part of her training told her not to enter.
Wait for firefighters.
Do not become another victim.
But then the voice came again.
“HELP ME!”
Emily ran.
People shouted behind her.
“DON’T GO IN!”
“WAIT!”
She didn’t.
The front door was unlocked.
Heat hit her instantly.
Smoke curled across the ceiling.
She pulled her black hoodie over her mouth and moved low.
“HELLO?”
A crash from upstairs.
Then crying.
“UP HERE!”
Emily took the stairs two at a time.
One section of railing was already burning.
The hallway above was worse.
Thicker smoke.
Cracking wood.
A heat so intense it felt alive.
“KEEP YELLING!”
“HELP!”
She followed the voice.
Second door on the left.
Emily shoved it open.
A boy in blue pajamas was on the floor beside a wheelchair with one broken wheel.
Ten years old.
Brown hair plastered to his forehead.
Tears streaming down his face.
He tried dragging himself backward with both hands.
“DON’T LEAVE ME!”
Emily dropped to her knees.
“I won’t.”
She checked him quickly.
Conscious.
Breathing.
No obvious severe burns.
“Can you move your legs?”
He shook his head frantically.
“No!”
She slid one arm behind his back and the other beneath his knees.
“I’m picking you up.”
The boy wrapped both arms around her neck.
Emily stood.
He was heavier than he looked.
Adrenaline made it possible.
She turned toward the hallway.
A burning ceiling beam crashed down.
BOOM.
Emily recoiled.
The exit disappeared behind sparks and flaming wood.
The boy screamed into her shoulder.
Emily backed into the bedroom.
Smoke thickened.
She looked toward the window.
Too high.
No safe drop.
Bathroom?
Closet?
Another room?
“HOLD ON TO ME!”
The boy tightened his arms around her neck.
Then suddenly—
he pulled back.
Looked directly into her face.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Emily froze.
The boy’s lips trembled.
“My mother said you would come.”
Emily stared at him.
May you like
The fire roared behind them.
“…What?”
