Chapter 4 - RACHEL DIDN’T RUN AWAY
Rachel had not vanished because she wanted freedom.
She vanished because she was afraid.
Not of a boyfriend.
Not of drugs.
Not of some random threat.
Of their father.
Thomas Carter owned Carter Mobility Systems, a company that manufactured rehabilitation equipment, hospital lifts, and pediatric mobility devices.
Emily grew up believing it was simply successful.
She did not know Rachel had worked in compliance.
Two months before disappearing, Rachel found internal reports showing one pediatric wheelchair model had a locking defect.
Not catastrophic in every chair.
But dangerous.
A failed wheel lock could cause a chair to roll during transfer or on inclines.
Rachel wanted a recall.
Thomas refused immediate action.
He argued the defect rate was too low and a recall would destroy a pending acquisition.
Rachel began collecting documents.
Then she disappeared.
Sarah told Emily:
“She came to me.”
“Why?”
“We were college roommates.”
Emily stared.
“She was pregnant.”
That hit differently.
“Noah?”
Sarah nodded.
“Rachel believed if your father knew about the baby, he would use custody, money, anything to force her back.”
Emily shook her head.
“My father wouldn’t—”
Then stopped.
She did not know that anymore.
Sarah continued.
“Rachel changed her last name. Moved twice. Kept Noah out of family photographs online. She told him about you.”
