Chapter 3 - THE SISTER EVERYONE SAID RAN AWAY

Rachel Carter vanished at twenty-three.
That was the official family story.
She ran away.
Needed space.
Had problems.
Didn’t want contact.
Emily hated that story from the beginning.
Rachel had never been reckless.
She paid bills early.
Called their mother every Sunday.
Remembered birthdays.
Carried spare bandages in her purse because Emily was always getting hurt.
Then one morning she disappeared.
Phone off.
Bank account untouched.
Apartment emptied just enough to look intentional.
Their father, Thomas Carter, insisted she had left voluntarily.
Police found no evidence of foul play.
Months passed.
Then years.
Emily eventually stopped asking questions out loud.
Not because she believed Rachel had abandoned them.
Because every question made her parents close ranks.
Now Rachel had a son.
A ten-year-old son.
A son who knew Emily’s name.
At the hospital, Emily waited outside Noah’s room until Sarah finally came out.
Sarah’s face tightened when she saw her.
“You.”
Emily stood.
“You know me?”
Sarah hesitated.
Then nodded.
“I know who you are.”
“Where is Rachel?”
Sarah looked toward Noah’s door.
“Not here.”
“That is not an answer.”
Sarah lowered her voice.
“Emily, this is not the place.”
“My sister disappeared twelve years ago. Her son just told me she said I would come. I pulled him out of a burning house. This is exactly the place.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
May you like
“Rachel is alive.”
Emily forgot how to breathe.
