Chapter 1 - SHE'S ALIVE

Emma Parker knew something was wrong before Ryan zipped the suitcase.

She was sitting on the nursery floor because standing had become impossible.

Baby Ethan was crying inside the bassinet.

The room smelled faintly of baby powder, clean laundry, and something metallic Emma did not want to name.

Her body felt cold.

Too cold.

She had delivered eleven days earlier.

The birth had been difficult.

Long labor.

Emergency surgery.

A hemorrhage the obstetrician controlled before discharge.

Emma had been warned about symptoms that meant call immediately.

Heavy bleeding.

Dizziness.

Weakness.

Shortness of breath.

Fever.

Pain getting worse instead of better.

She had all but one.

And Ryan was packing for Aspen.

“Ryan…”

He stood in the nursery doorway wearing a black ski jacket over a cashmere sweater.

His overnight bag sat beside his leg.

He looked annoyed before she finished speaking.

“Please don’t go.”

Ryan exhaled.

“Emma.”

She reached toward him.

Her hand trembled.

“I don’t feel right.”

“You haven’t felt right since we came home.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Baby Ethan screamed harder.

Emma tried to push herself upright.

Pain sliced through her lower abdomen.

She gasped and fell back onto one palm.

Ryan looked away.

“You’re being dramatic.”

Emma stared at him.

“What?”

“It’s my birthday.”

She could not understand the sentence.

Not because she didn’t hear it.

Because it did not belong in this room.

“I need a doctor.”

“You called the nurse yesterday.”

“She said if the bleeding got worse—”

“You said it was slowing down.”

“It was.”

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

His irritation sharpened.

“My friends already booked everything.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“I’m asking you not to leave me alone.”

“You won’t be alone.”

She looked around the empty house.

“My mother can’t fly in until Monday.”

“You have neighbors.”

“Ryan.”

He picked up the suitcase.

Emma tried to crawl toward him.

Her arm buckled.

“Please.”

He stepped backward.

Not toward her.

Away.

Something inside Emma understood before her mind did.

He was actually going.

Ryan looked at the crying baby.

Then at Emma.

“You need to stop making every single thing a crisis.”

He turned.

Emma whispered:

“Ryan…”

The front door slammed thirty seconds later.

The sound traveled through the quiet suburban house.

Emma collapsed harder onto the carpet.

Baby Ethan kept crying.

She pressed one hand to her abdomen.

When she lifted it, there was blood on her palm.

Her breath broke.

“I need a hospital…”

The phone was on the low changing table.

Three feet away.

It might as well have been across the state.

Emma dragged herself toward it.

Once.

Twice.

Her vision narrowed.

She reached the phone with two fingers and pulled it down.

The screen lit.

A notification opened automatically.

Ryan’s social account.

Live video.

Snow.

Music.

Champagne.

A luxury terrace overlooking the mountains.

Ryan stood in the middle of a group of laughing friends.

Perfectly warm.

Perfectly clean.

Perfectly happy.

He lifted a glass.

“Happy birthday to me!”

People cheered.

Emma stared at him.

Tears slid silently down her face.

The nursery seemed to tilt.

Her hand went limp.

The phone fell beside her.

Three days later, Ryan returned home wearing sunglasses and carrying a glossy birthday gift bag.

He was smiling when he opened the front door.

“Emma?”

No answer.

He wheeled his suitcase inside.

“Babe?”

Silence.

His smile faded.

He walked toward the nursery.

Then stopped in the doorway.

The carpet was stained dark.

The bassinet was empty.

Ryan’s suitcase slipped from his hand.

“Emma?!”

He rushed inside.

The room looked abandoned in panic.

A blanket on the floor.

An overturned bottle.

Emma’s phone missing.

No baby.

“ETHAN?!”

Nothing.

His breathing accelerated.

He stared at the bloodstain.

Then slowly backed away.

A voice spoke from behind him.

May you like

“She’s alive.”

Ryan spun around.
