Chapter 5 - WHO RECEIVED THE NECKLACE
The jewelry purchase was not for Ryan’s mother.
Not for Emma.
It was for Sophie Lane.
Ryan’s former girlfriend.
Emma learned that from an Aspen hotel photograph posted by somebody else.
Sophie stood beside Ryan in a white ski jacket.
Around her neck:
a diamond pendant from the same boutique listed on the statement.
Emma stared at the image.
Claire swore.
Mara Sloan said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“Do you know her?”
Emma nodded.
“She was at our wedding.”
Ryan had called Sophie an old friend.
Nothing more.
They had dated before Emma.
Ended years ago.
Apparently, not completely.
Hotel records showed Sophie had a separate room.
That mattered.
No proof yet she shared Ryan’s.
Then Claire found another video.
At 1:12 a.m. on Ryan’s birthday, Sophie kissed him outside the resort bar.
Not a friendly kiss.
Emma watched it once.
Then turned the phone over.
She did not cry.
That worried Claire more than tears.
Emma said:
“So while I was in surgery because I almost bled to death, he was with her.”
“No,” Mara corrected gently.
“The timestamp is the night before your second procedure.”
Emma nodded.
“Thank you.”
