Chapter 3 - THE CALL HE SAID HE NEVER RECEIVED

Ryan denied deleting anything.
At first.
He said Emma never called after he left.
Mara already had phone records.
Emma had called him at 4:18 p.m.
The call lasted forty-three seconds.
Ryan answered.
Then at 4:21, Emma texted:
Please come home. I’m bleeding more. I’m scared.
At 4:24:
Ryan please.
At 4:31:
I’m calling 911.
That message never sent.
Her phone lost connection when she collapsed.
Ryan’s device showed the messages had been opened.
Then manually deleted from the visible conversation.
Not erased from carrier records.
Mara placed the timeline on the kitchen table.
“You saw these.”
Ryan stared.
“I was drinking.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“I thought she was panicking.”
“You answered the call.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“What did she say?”
He looked toward the nursery.
“She said there was blood.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Mara’s voice stayed calm.
“And what did you say?”
Ryan said nothing.
The call itself had not been recorded.
But one of Ryan’s friends had been filming on the Aspen terrace at the time.
In the background, another video captured Ryan on his phone.
His voice was faint but clear enough after enhancement.
Emma could not be heard.
Ryan could.
“Then call somebody, Emma. I’m not ruining this trip.”
Forty seconds later, he hung up.
Mara let the silence do the work.
Ryan whispered:
“Oh God.”
Claire stared at him.
“No. Don’t do that.”
He looked at her.
May you like
“Don’t what?”
“Act horrified now that somebody can prove what you did.”
