Chapter 7 - THE PERSON WHO KNEW EMMA WAS SICK
The mystery became uglier when Claire remembered a conversation with Eleanor Parker.
Ryan’s mother.
Three days before Aspen, Eleanor called Emma.
She knew Emma had increasing bleeding.
Emma told her.
Eleanor advised:
“It’s probably normal. Don’t ruin Ryan’s birthday over postpartum anxiety.”
Emma had forgotten the call in the haze of recovery.
Phone records confirmed it.
Eleanor denied saying those exact words.
Then Claire produced a voice message Emma had sent immediately afterward.
Emma’s voice:
Ryan’s mom says I’m overreacting again. I don’t know. Maybe I am.
Not proof of the exact quote.
Proof of the effect.
Why did this matter?
Because Ryan later claimed no one around him understood Emma might be medically unstable.
His own mother did.
And rather than encourage care, she minimized it.
Then investigators discovered Eleanor had booked part of the Aspen trip using Ryan’s points account.
She had helped organize it.
Not a criminal conspiracy.
No evidence she wanted Emma harmed.
But a family culture of dismissal.
