Chapter 6 - DANIEL'S SIGNATURE
Daniel had signed a caregiver authorization after Emma’s last hospital stay.
It allowed Margaret to:
pick up prescriptions,
attend routine appointments,
receive instructions,
and consent to ordinary care if neither parent was reachable.
It did not make her guardian.
It did not let her override Claire.
Still, Margaret had authority on paper.
Daniel signed it because Claire was exhausted after Emma’s treatment cycle.
He never discussed it with Claire beyond:
“Mom can help with pickups.”
Claire stared at the form.
“You signed this without showing me?”
“You were asleep.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I thought it was administrative.”
Claire’s anger changed.
Margaret was cruel.
But Daniel had repeatedly treated access as harmless.
Portal access.
Tablet access.
Medical authorization.
He had opened doors.
Claire asked:
“Did she ask for this?”
Daniel nodded.
“She said it would reduce pressure on you.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Everything she did was supposed to help me.”
Then Grace found the authorization request email.
Margaret to Daniel:
If Claire keeps changing plans based on Emma’s emotions, we need one consistent adult who can follow medical structure.
Daniel replied:
Agreed. Keep it simple.
Claire read the words.
“You agreed?”
“I thought she meant medication times.”
“She meant me.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
That was the first time he admitted it without qualification.
Then the pediatric office produced an appointment summary from two weeks earlier.
Margaret attended alone with Emma.
The note said:
Caregiver concerned mother reinforces food avoidance and illness identity.
Claire felt a flash of rage.
Then the next line:
Child appears anxious when grandmother discusses mother.
Rachel had written:
Recommend next visit with parent present and private child check-in.
That follow-up appointment was scheduled.
