Chapter 7 - THE CANCELED VISIT
Margaret said the appointment conflicted with school.
Emma had not returned to school yet.
Claire checked the calendar.
No conflict.
Then Margaret said Emma was too tired.
Possible.
Then Grace obtained the cancellation note.
Reason entered:
Parent declined.
Claire stared.
“I did not decline.”
The clinic had not called to verify.
Why would they?
An authorized caregiver called from the family number.
The system worked as designed.
That was the problem.
Then Rachel remembered a phrase Emma used during the earlier visit.
“I get hungry after Grandma leaves.”
Rachel asked why.
Emma said:
“Because then Mom lets me eat.”
Rachel documented it.
Margaret immediately answered:
“Claire gives in after Emma refuses meals.”
At the time, that sounded like a disagreement over feeding strategy.
Now it sounded different.
Rachel had also measured Emma’s weight.
Down another pound.
She recommended:
no food punishment,
no withholding preferred tolerated foods,
consistent nausea medication as directed,
and parent-supervised feeding plan.
Margaret left with printed instructions.
Claire never saw them.
Where were they?
Daniel searched the car Margaret usually drove.
Nothing.
Then the kitchen junk drawer.
Nothing.
Finally Emma said:
“Grandma ripped the paper.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
“She said doctor doesn’t know me.”
“Where did she put it?”
Emma pointed toward the trash bin.
The same trash bin from the kitchen incident.
The bag from that day had already been removed.
No paper remained.
But Rachel’s portal copy did.
At the bottom, in bold:
DO NOT USE FOOD ACCESS AS A BEHAVIORAL CONSEQUENCE DURING RECOVERY.
