Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH
Amber’s offer was calculated.
She would plead guilty to limited financial crimes and obstruction.
She would admit participating in the plan to frame Sarah.
But she would deny intending any physical harm to Caleb.
In exchange, prosecutors would cap her sentence.
Her bargaining chip was Richard’s original trust amendment.
According to Amber, the grandchildren’s trust had never been legally executed.
If true, Eleanor’s current voting arrangement could collapse.
Carter Foods might fall into years of litigation.
Michael wanted to reject the deal.
Eleanor hesitated.
Sarah surprised everyone.
“Take it seriously.”
Michael stared at her.
“After what she did?”
“I want the truth more than I want a dramatic punishment.”
Melissa requested proof before discussing terms.
Amber produced the original amendment.
Forensics confirmed Richard’s signature.
But there was a problem.
The document did not weaken Caleb’s position.
It strengthened both grandchildren.
Richard intended Caleb and Lily to hold equal voting rights.
Amber had lied about what the document contained.
Why reveal it?
Because she wanted to bait Eleanor into destroying or suppressing it.
If Eleanor had tried, Amber could claim the family manipulated the estate.
Eleanor simply handed it to the court.
Amber’s trap failed.
Her negotiating leverage evaporated.
Victor’s testimony, Margaret’s archive, Lily’s statement, the yellow envelope, financial records, and the planted green bottle formed a cumulative case.
No single piece was perfect.
Together, they were devastating.
Amber was arrested after the hearing.
She did not cry.
She looked at Sarah.
“You think this family will thank you?”
“I don’t care.”
“They’ll blame you when the company breaks.”
“Then they can.”
Amber smiled faintly.
“That’s why I underestimated you.”
It was the closest thing to respect Sarah ever received from her.
Months of legal proceedings followed.
Victor accepted a plea that included prison time and loss of custody rights pending future review.
Margaret received a reduced sentence after cooperation.
Amber went to trial on the most serious charges she refused to admit.
Her defense was intelligent.
Victor was vindictive.
Margaret was a thief.
Lily was influenced.
Eleanor was biased.
Sarah wanted revenge.
Every point contained some truth.
But Amber could not explain why the conspiracy existed before Caleb’s collapse.
The jury convicted her of conspiracy, financial fraud, obstruction, witness tampering, and child endangerment.
She was acquitted on one count requiring proof prosecutors could not establish.
Sarah accepted that.
Reality did not need to become cleaner than it was.
After sentencing, Eleanor called a family meeting.
Michael assumed it concerned Carter Foods.
Instead, Eleanor placed Richard’s original trust amendment on the table.
“Caleb and Lily inherit together.”
Sarah nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“There’s another clause.”
Sarah’s stomach tightened.
Eleanor slid the final page forward.
Richard had named a temporary trustee if family conflict threatened the children.
The name was not Michael.
Not Amber.
Not Eleanor.
