Chapter 9 - THE NOTE RICHARD NEVER SENT
The note was five years old.
Richard wrote that he no longer trusted either of his children with the company.
Michael was too eager to sell.
Amber was too desperate to control.
He intended to create a grandchildren’s trust so the company would survive the next generation.
That was the origin of Caleb’s future voting rights.
But Richard added something shocking.
He believed Victor had been secretly helping Amber move company money.
Richard planned to confront them.
If the note was authentic, Amber’s motive existed years before Caleb’s collapse.
Melissa asked why Victor had preserved the binder.
“Insurance,” Sarah said.
Against Amber.
Victor had likely kept evidence in case their alliance failed.
It had.
The hunt for Victor intensified.
Amber performed grief perfectly.
She told police she feared her estranged husband was unstable.
She asked for protection.
She gave television cameras a statement about “years of coercive control.”
Sarah did not know how much was true.
That was Amber’s strongest defense.
Victor might genuinely have mistreated her.
He might also be her accomplice.
Victims could still commit crimes.
Amber weaponized the complexity.
Meanwhile, Michael and Sarah began fighting.
Michael wanted Sarah to stop pursuing Richard’s death.
“My father is gone.”
“And Caleb almost died.”
“That’s different.”
“No. It may be the same people.”
Michael accused Sarah of turning every family memory into evidence.
Sarah accused him of protecting Amber.
Neither apologized.
That night, Michael slept downstairs.
Amber called him the next morning.
She cried.
Sarah overheard only fragments.
“Mom is destroying us.”
“Sarah hates me.”
“Victor did everything.”
Michael did not agree.
But he listened.
Amber was testing whether the marriage could be split.
Sarah confronted him afterward.
“If you believe her, say it.”
“I believe she’s my sister.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Michael looked exhausted.
Then he said something worse.
“I believe you’re starting to see conspiracies everywhere.”
Sarah felt suddenly alone.
Within twenty-four hours, Amber filed documents claiming Sarah had manipulated both Eleanor and Caleb because of an obsession with controlling the Carter estate.
Michael did not support the petition.
He did not immediately denounce it either.
That hesitation was enough.
Then police found Victor.
He walked voluntarily into a station two states away.
He offered full cooperation.
In exchange, he wanted immunity for financial crimes and emergency custody of Lily.
His first statement was simple.
“Amber planned what happened to Caleb.”
Sarah thought the case had finally broken open.
