Chapter 7 - THE ENVELOPE CALEB CARRIED
Caleb remembered Amber handing him a yellow legal envelope near the picnic tables.
She told him it was a surprise for Eleanor and asked him to place it inside Sarah’s bag.
Caleb never opened it.
He carried it for several minutes.
Then Lily told him not to.
Caleb hid it beneath the picnic blanket instead.
Police searched evidence collected from the park.
The envelope was found.
Inside were copies of trust documents.
Nothing dangerous.
But the exterior showed traces of the same unidentified material associated with Caleb’s collapse.
Nobody could prove who placed it there.
Amber claimed she had never seen the envelope.
Victor claimed Amber carried several identical envelopes.
Sarah thought they finally had enough.
Melissa disagreed.
“We have a contaminated envelope, a child’s memory, and two adults blaming each other.”
“Amber handed it to him.”
“Then we need corroboration.”
Lily might provide it.
Amber prevented that by filing an emergency request to suspend Eleanor’s contact with Lily, claiming Eleanor was coaching her against Amber.
Family court ordered supervised visits.
Amber had isolated the witness without openly refusing access.
Sarah began to see how strategically her sister-in-law moved.
Every attack was disguised as protection.
Every delay looked procedural.
Then Carter Foods’ board announced an emergency audit.
Amber responded first.
She voluntarily stepped away from financial oversight.
Michael was surprised.
Sarah was not.
Amber would never surrender unless the ground underneath the position was already damaged.
The auditors found fraudulent invoices.
But the approvals bore Michael’s electronic credentials.
Michael denied authorizing them.
His login had been used from the company network on nights he was out of state.
Someone had cloned or shared his credentials.
Amber’s attorneys suggested Michael had been running the scheme and was framing his sister.
The company suspended both siblings.
Eleanor’s trust shares now became decisive.
Amber renewed her competency petition.
Sarah realized the family conflict was becoming corporate warfare.
Then Melissa received a strange email.
Attached was a photograph of Victor opening the trunk of his car.
Inside were stacks of Carter Foods records.
The sender wrote:
VICTOR KEPT COPIES. ASK WHAT HE PLANNED TO DO WITH THEM.
Sarah showed Michael.
He looked at the photograph for several seconds.
“That trunk.”
“What?”
“I’ve seen it.”
“Where?”
Michael swallowed.
“The night Dad died.”
Sarah knew Eleanor’s husband, Richard Carter, had died five years earlier after a sudden stroke at the family lake house.
His death had never been suspicious.
Michael looked at the image again.
